Cordish swings for the fences, and hits St. Louis?

I warned you about this way back in December of '05. Today it's official. Cordish has announced the anchor tenant barbecue joint. The place that's supposed to make us all forget about Lil' Jake's Eat It and Beat It. The crown jewel of the downtown entertainment district representing all that is awesome about Kansas City barbecue is...

Minneapolis-based Famous Dave's. Home of the St. Louis Style Rib.

Now I like Famous Dave's. I used to eat there all the time when I lived in Minneapolis, but come on!

This is very disappointing. I know that Gates and Bryant have both balked at the opportunity because it was very expensive and was too close to their main locations (which are already destinations for tourists). It's just disappointing when the 100s of KC BBQ places (that do REAL BBQ, not the St. Louis junk) couldn't get a local place down there. Maybe even a Zarda or other place that isn't reliant on a downtown location.

This is what happens when money is more important than the city heritage -- and is why it's difficult to build something new that is unique to a city...

Famous Dave's has been long expected but is still terribly disappointing. Cordish should be ashamed for being unable to sign anyone local. I like the Zarda idea Brent mentioned -- that's a good local BBQ joint that has fans all over the country yet does not currently have a presence anywhere near downtown.

Going to KC to eat Famous Daves is like going to a pub in Ireland and drinking Bud Light, or going to New York and eating at Pizza Hut.

Gates is very disappointing. His Ribs have no meat. The burnt ends are good though. Sauce alright. The most impressive thing about Gates is the fact that he paid back money to the city when they tried to dog him out about development money and he hires mostly black folks. Thats why I patronize his business, NOT because he has the best anything in town (except for the big booty A-A women they have at 12th and Brooklyn who just love the HIP(S), among other things). Personally, I like Oklahoma Joes. They actually have meat on their ribs. Excellent sauce. There's nothing fun about biting into ribs that have no meat. Just an observation.

Eating BBQ at a nationwide franchise is similar to eating at county jails, hospitals, or having Italian at Fazoli's. Trust me, I know these things. Make no mistake about it, I do think Ollie Gates is a man worthy of respect. BTW, when is Mark planning to discuss things that people actually give a shit about in KC? Much like the other candidates, he seems to have his head downtown (being rather nice I am), as if that is what KC is. *thinking Mark is not that bright*

Downtown spending is a bottomless pit and people are tired of it.

Scoot,

I don't have anything against Famous Dave's. As I said before, I like the food. I guess I'm still stinging from an interview he did on NPR years ago and he talked about South Carolina and Texas but didn't even mention Kansas City until a caller brought it up.

Hip,

I appreciate your criticism but I refuse to engage you in a debate over my blog topics. At least I "have" a blog. I'm putting myself out here for all to read. I make no apologies for that.

I mentioned this on another forum somewhere but when I was on vacation in Minneapolis this past summer I asked a bartender to recommend someplace for dinner. "You should try Famous Da...," she started to say, then cut herself off and said, "Oh, that's right, you're from Kansas City. You have much better back home."

I'm trying to help you Mark. That will prevent me from having to tell you "I told you so" when you fail your bid.

I cant wait until you attend the Council candidates forum in Northeast. When people start to ask you questions similar to these, you'll know whats up.

In the interim, continue your current flow (similar to every other politician) and you will find yourself in line with a large group of political hopefuls wishing they had a second chance to agrree with me. I am VERY important. I only seem rather agitated, but thats my writing style; or lack thereof.

Hip,

You're going to be waiting a long time if you expect me to be at a candidates forum in the Northeast. I haven't been, nor will I be invited. Last time I checked that's the 1st District. Only Mayoral, at-large and 1st in-district candidates were invited.

I'm an in-district candidate in the 4th District.

I have to concentrate on going door to door to door in my district. Much as I'd like to go to every forum in the City, I have to be realistic and only attend the ones where I can reach 4th District voters.

On that note, you'll probably be waiting a long time to actually be able to sit in a room full of people (council) having never once addressed a single issue affecting Northeast Kansas City.

Surely you've done enough research on the council position to figure out one day your vote will count towards some sort of policy, ordinance,or zoning that affects Northeast. Shame on you Mark.
