Even though "paddling the Chinese Dragon Boat" sounds like a yoga position, that's what I was doing Saturday afternoon on Brush Creek. I was recruited by a friend in the Plaza Rotary Club. We did pretty well, winning our heat handily over the Leawood Rotary Club team.
As the defending champions, the Plaza team got a pass to the finals after our first heat. As we were watching the race that would determine who are competition would be, the Plaza Sheraton team capsized their boat! Nobody was hurt but the boat went straight to the bottom of the creek. That pretty much put an end to the day's festivities. I felt bad for the Sheraton team. Had I gone into that water I would probably still be in the shower scrubbing frantically and praying for my life.
All in all it was a lot of fun, but not very well attended. There were quite a few Chinese families there to watch but most of them left after the first heat. Unless you were actually in one of the boats it was pretty boring. It's too bad. I think so much could be done to make the Dragon Boat races a big event. |

post a commentyeah, didn't it rain friday? thats when it's extra spicy in brush creek, if you know what i mean.
brush creek could be a lot more used. Maybe we need some RC boats by the plaza like at Worlds of Fun. just thinking...
Look at what takes place the week before the Kentucky Derby!! That is a cool festival, with community events like the dragon boat races...they have bed races, and assorted other stuff.
You should join the Plaza Rotary. You have an open invitation to attend their 7:30 breakfast meetings on Friday mornings. Just drop me an email and I'll set it up. A whole lot of nice people doing good things.
Rotary is too rich for my blood Dan. I got the full court press to join the Downtown Rotary already. I'll leave that to you movers and shakers. ;-)
doinkman and nightmare,
I like where you're going. I told my wife when I got home (safe and dry thank god) that the people that seemed to enjoy the races the most were the little kids.
Wouldn't it be great to have Dragon Boat races once a month throughout the summer? Nothing too extravagant, just a couple of teams racing up and down the creek for a while. I think the kids would absolutely love it. I would definitely volunteer my time on a paddle. Why not?
No full court press here - just wanted you to know you are welcome. And, as a point of clarification, if not persuasion, the Plaza Rotary club is to the Downtown Club as dinner with friends is to a Black Tie event. We have plenty of movers, but relatively few shakers. and it's also pretty inexpensive.
