Mayor to citizens: I have the ability to change my mind
| Short, sweet and to the point. I am so glad the mayor has changed his mind about the free car. I know there are a lot of grass roots supporters breathing easier today. I was hoping for something positive to come out of the 29th floor so I could write something good about our government. It's a pleasant surprise to be able to compliment Mayor Funkhouser on his ability to change his mind. Thank you Mark for taking this issue off the table. Gosh I guess there's nothing left to do now but close up shop and go home. There's so little left to be done. Maybe some minor stuff like sewers, streets, light rail, economic development, taxes, pollution... But nothing real difficult! Thanks again Mark. News from the Mayor's Office Mayor Mark Funkhouser to decline offer of free car Mayor Mark Funkhouser announced today that he will not accept the free use of a Honda Civic hybrid car from Honda of Tiffany Springs. The dealership offered the Mayor free use of the car for the length of his term in office. The Mayor also announced that City staff has negotiated an agreement to cancel the two-year lease of a Lincoln Town Car from Northtowne Lincoln-Mercury. The City will pay $5,647.04 to cancel the remainder of the lease. This is in addition to $1,447.90 in monthly payments already made by the City. The car will be returned to the dealership this week. |

post a commentGood call. That was the right thing to do.
Great now if he would only get rid Frances (kick everyone out) Semler that would be great.
I wouldn't give him too much credit. It took a lot of hoopla and criticims to get Funk to realize how wrongheaded he was. Just like when he came out for vouchers in the mayor's race. Politically speaking, this one should have been a no-brainer.
Unless Funk hires someone with real world political skill and experience to join his inner circle, the next four years are going to be filled with stupid distractions like this.
Plus, this situation begs the question that if he doesn't inherently get that trading on your office to take a free car is bad politics (if not unethical), then how in the hell is he ever going to make something as complicated as light rail become a reality?
Unfortunately I have to agree with Nitwit. Much like the Park Board, the way it was handled seems to sabatoge the greater value of the move.
The new Parks Board was a step in the right direction, but he kicked the outgoing Board in the teeth (a classless move) with his comments, and nominates Semler. Both of those moves directly undermined the new Board.
On the Civic deal,he only refused it because of the huge public outcry, and we're led to believe that without the public outcry, the attitude of "If it's free, you take it" would be the norm at city hall.
Unfortunately, there is little solice the objective, sane Funk supporters like myself can take in his refusal of the Civic.
Well put, mainstream. Your's is a voice of wisdom.
And has anybody commented on the irony of this....
Funkhouser said the outgoing board promoted a "culture of elitism and community divisiveness.”
(Kansas City Star, June 12th)
In the next breath, he puts up Frances Semler, FAIR and Minuteman member, and incites a protest rally the following day.
He names Semler after hearing from no less than 4 councilpeople that she was a divisive personality.
Is this leadership? I think someone needs to have a kitchen talk with the Mayor. He's behaving like someone who feels like they have been denied power.
I'll repeat that: He's behaving like someone who has been denied power.
And that's not leadership behavior.
Like I said over at GoneMild, mainstream, some of us who opposed Funk are just shaking our heads laughing as we watch our worst fears of a Funkhouser administration be realized.
Don't get me wrong. I really do think he's a halfway decent guy and his heart is in the right place. But I seriously doubted that he had the demeanor or experience to provide the kind of leadership KC needs. He can still get there mind you, but we're going to have to put up with a lot of learning on the job in the meantime. Of course most us when we're still learning don't carry the same kind of chip on our shoulder and arrogant outlook that he has, which is part of what makes it so gosh darned funny to watch.
Even funnier, he's been lying to the public left and right to cover his tracks. Why the Star hasn't slammed him for it, I'm not sure, but it will come eventually. First Funk played ignorant and said he didn't know about Semler's background, then he said he Googled her, then we hear that Mrs. Funk apparently knew but didn't think it was a problem, and now we find out that Funk met with council people about her beforehand.
So he's making bad decisions, not telling the truth, and then he's subsequently claiming that he knows better than everyone else what's right. I couldn't agree more. You're right. That's definitely not leadership, and somehow I don't think it's what Funk's supporters thought they would be getting.
For the moment, nitwit, you're correct to say "I told you so".
And no it's not what I was expecting. And given my current mood, I'm not ready just yet to find the humor in it.
I feel betrayed by my high expectations, and now am still hoping for the best. I think Funk still has it in him to pull it out, I guess there's just a little more OJT involved here.
We use to do a neighborhood crime watch with 3 to 4 cars to harass the drug dealers and prostitutes. We call the police in order to interrupt their business.Either on a Friday or Saturday night for several years. Because it was illegal for what they were doing and break ins were happening with in the neighborhood.
Some of the police called us "vigilantes". While others liked it.
Have there been any headlines where the minutemen( so called vigilantes) have murder and buried mexicans?
When people get afraid they start to shoot their mouth off. Why are you guys afraid of a 73 year old woman? You guys sure talk about how racist the minutemen are but where are the headlines about them?
No one mentions "La Raza".
La Raza (Mexican Spanish IPA: [la ˈrasa]; Castillian Spanish IPA: [la ˈraθa]) is a Spanish-language phrase which, while literally translated as "the race", is more often used as a synonym of "el pueblo" or "la gente", both of which mean "the people". Their an extremist group.
