Don't let the door hit you on the way out
![]() It's no secret our mayor is a political novice. But no one seems to have noticed that as of late he's actually handling the Frances Semler situation quite well. Unfortunately for the mayor, Ms. Semler is also a political novice who can't read between the lines. Deanne Smith over at Prime Buzz reports that Frances Semler remains steadfast that she won't resign from the Parks Board. Aside from the fact that Aggie Stackhaus is truly the most horrible Parks Board member ever (hyperbole alert!) and shouldn't be given the dignity of a resignation, she should be publicly fired... What was I talking about again? Oh yeah, Frances Semler. Anyhoo. Look at what Mark Funkhouser recently said in regards to Frances Semler. Once again, credit to Prime Buzz. Mayor Mark Funkhouser said he understands if Semler wanted to resign after Council of La Raza and the NAACP both said they were reconsidering holding their conventions in Kansas City because of her membership in the Minutemen Civil Defense Corp. “If she feels like it’s more than she wants to deal with, I’m not going to force her to do it,” Funkhouser said. Not exactly an overwhelming take it to the mattresses show of support. "I understand if you resign" is not "I stand by you no matter what." Keep in mind this is the same Mark Funkhouser who was refusing to accept Semler's resignation just a few short weeks ago. In perhaps his best political work so far, Mark Funkhouser is saying Frances, I really can't double back on a decision I've made because it will make me look weak, but you would really be helping me out if you would resign. But is Frances listening? It doesn't look like it. |

post a commentI'm not ready, as you are Mark, to congratulate Funk on his good judgement.
That's like congratulating someone who stops hitting themselves in the head with a hammer because they've finally discovered "hey, the pain magically stops when I stop hitting myself with the hammer".
As expected, this situation has the potential to turn into a semi-national grudge match between conservatives and liberals.
And who'd a thought that when Gloria made her initial bone-headed move to insist Semler serve on the parks board.
Anybody with any common sense would have.
After my one experience with the entire Parks Board, I'm not sure you could actually TELL them to resign and they'd be saavy enough to understand what you were getting at...
Oh, Christ.
"Mayor Mark Funkhouser said he understands if Semler wanted to resign after Council of La Raza and the NAACP both said they were reconsidering holding their conventions in Kansas City because of her membership in the Minutemen Civil Defense Corp.
“If she feels like it’s more than she wants to deal with, I’m not going to force her to do it,” Funkhouser said."
In politico-speak, that is as clear as you can get.
Look, I don't think Funk's wife had any business recommending her, I don't think Funk should have appointed her, and I think she should have "taken-one-for-the-team" early on and either resigned or refused the appointment.
That having been said...
It is the Kansas City Missouri Park Board!!!
How in the FUNK can this possibly have any influence on the debate over the national decision to allow a work visa program, crack down on illegal border crossings in Arizona, Texas and New Mexico, allow Mexican truck drivers access to American highways, or provide more vocational school training to American Citzens on picking vegetables, roofing in August, landscaping or changing jizz-soaked sheets at cheap motels?
This is a manufactured crises by local bloggers and political wannabes who take their self-percieved influence WAY, WAY too seriously.
Repeat after me...
No. One. Cares.
It's the Parks Board. It's grass mowing contracts and poop-scooping rules.
No. One. Cares.
i guess kansas city is going backwards when they bend for naacp and la razra its plain and simple i guess rita velencian and her cronies of the naacp would rejoice if francis would have had a heart attack while they were on her porch guess that would make kc a better place to live
Mr. D says........
Semler won't step down. Sometimes you have to stand up to what is right. Even though you have people berating you to step down.
Funkhouser was being compassion toward Semler.
XO,
Saying "no one cares" does not make it so. Granted, you don't care. But a lot of us do.
You can't tell people how to feel. If we want to get worked up over the Parks Board, then we will.
As I've said before. Semler really doesn't bother me all that much. Aggie Stackhaus is the one that needs to go.
"You can't tell people how to feel"
What?
Then what is the point of me having a blog?!?
LOL!
O.K. Assuming you are right and some people really do care about how a small fraction of a park board in a small-to-medium sized city feels about issues that don't affect the park board...
WHY do you care?
What does it matter?
Keep her, dump her, who cares?
It has nothing to do with sewers, streets, steel plates, sweetheart TIF packages, dead bodies floating in the river, crack whores on Independence Avenue or Jerry Cheeseburger and his cohorts harassing citizens and visitors.
It's a non-issue. It doesn't matter.
Address REAL issues that affect REAL people.
The only people who care about the Kansas City Parks are people affluent enough to have the reserve indignance to spare for Kansas City Parks.
Everyone else is too concerned about getting shot, robbed, carjacked or harassed by panhandlers to care who is on the Parks Board or whether people in Waldo can take the leashes off their dogs.
Perspective people! Perspective!
Parks are not Kansas City's most pressing issues.
Parks are an issue that can be easily fixed -unlike many of the other issues you mention. If KC can't fix their park issues there is little hope anything more complicated will be accomplished. Just because YOU'RE not affected by the parks board doesn't mean I'm not (I use the parks 4x/wk on avg) - I'm seconding Mark, just saying something doesn't make it true - even for narcissists.
And if you don't care why don't you just keep your pie hole shut and let those of us that do care discuss it? Instead of trying to belittle everyone else for what they care about.
