$5K is for the small one. Also keep in mind the specs they're throwing around are for areas that average about 23mph winds. KC is far below that.
But imagine if KCPL topped every transmission pole with the 240AC version of these? Put a few on top of buildings like Mayor Bloomberg just came out and asked for. All these little bits would add up to no need for a new transmission station for Hyde Park.
Why not put 10's of thousands of these up in areas set aside as "wind farms"? Seems like the are more economic and environmentally friendly. The video is looking at them for individual use, but I can see them used commercially in a manner that could power whole regions. Very cool. This is the type of thinking that can both help the environment and bring more affordable energy to large populations. Not to mention create new industries here in America.
At $5K a pop they're still not cost effective. But Mayor Bloomberg has put out a Request For Proposal (RFP) that would include putting wind generators on top of New York City skyscrapers. Maybe if NYC takes the lead others will follow suit.

post a commentI want one! $5,000? Is that for the one that would completely power my home? Or would is that for the small one?
If it'd completely power my home, it'd probably pay for itself in 5-6 years...that's not a bad deal at all.

John,
