Darn kids and their addictive trash bags

Every year the neighborhood kids hit me up selling everything from flowers to trash bags. I don't mind. I too did my time hounding the neighbors. For little league it was World's Finest Chocolate bars. For school it was popcorn in decorative glass decanters. I don't remember what I had to sell for Cub Scouts but I'm sure it was useless also.

At least today's kids are forced into peddling things that are actually useful. Back to those trash bags. They're the best! Big, tough and available in colors. The problem is, what to do when you run out and there's no poor kids out hawking them at your door? I need some bags man! I need me some of the good stuff! Aren't there any organizations abusing kids by making them sell trash bags door to door this time of year?

Know anyone that has kids in Academe Lafayette? They're starting their annual trash bag sale this week....

Thanks Walter! I do have some AL kids on my block. That's who I bought from last year. I think I'll give mom a call and put in my order.

I do! I do! Have lots of bags. How many do you need?

And related to my comment at KCP, even.

St Elizabeth School at 75th & Main has yellow and white available year 'round.

Mark, you just happened to have touched upon one of my pet peeves.

"What is that?" you say.

It is companies who sell products, and make huge profits on the backs of charities.

Ask a Girl Scout clubmaster/packmaster/denmaster or whatever the hell they're called how much they make off of each box of cookies they sell.

It's about 63 cents. A box.

63 cents for a lot of effort and alot of markup for the cookie marketer.

That's a damn shame that on a box of cookies that costs, what, $5 or $6? I don't know.

That's a waste and a damn shame.

This is what I do: neighbor points and pushes their kids in my general direction with a donation sheet and a catalog of cookies or popcorn, and this is what I tell the youngster:

"Just write 'donation' on the line and I'll give you $5. I don't want to order any cookies but thank you."

$5 divided by 63 cents yields the equivalent of 7.9 boxes of Girl Scout cookies.

And guess what?

#1 - the kid has to work less to raise money

#2 - I personally save the planet the materials, paperboard, plastic which will be around for 5,000+ years, that would go into the production of almost 8 boxes of cookies.

#3 - I save on the backend consquences (no pun intended) of consuming those boxes of cookies thus decreasing the CSO's, methane emissions, and the requisite Jenny Craig subscriptions.

Ya oughta ask how much they are really making on each roll of trash bags.

Now, I'll admit trash bags are a little bit more useful than cookies and popcorn.

However, I'll try to end this on a positive note - buy compostable trash bags and send cash to the kid's cause - that ultimately sends the most sustainable and common sense message.

Unless of course the little buggers are peddling compostable trash bags in the first place.

Hi Mark,
They used to sell them at the 66 station at 63rd and Main. Ask the "boyz" there.
Happy New Year to you & N.
